Anatomy study of a red fox diving into snow using Gael Kerchenbaum's workflow for sculpting animal anatomy.
The fur was a big challenge for me as I find it really difficult to get that feeling of fluffiness without it looking like a mess, and I get a bit lost when it comes to arranging clumps. To combat this, I made two IMM brushes of acanthus leaves (filigree) so I would have a good base to start from and it would end up looking more sculptural. I quite like how Ellen Jewett incorporates flora into her animal sculptures.
I watched woodworking tutorials and did a few studies of acanthus leaves before adding them to the fox. Using a rough sketch as a guide for where to put the leaves really helped for placement, as the final render was at least my third attempt.
I looked to Beth Cavener's sculptures as reference also, mostly to see which colours she ignored to stop it from looking muddy; as foxes have a surprising amount of colour even on one individual.
